Trend Report: Waves & Scallops

Interior design—much like fashion—is an industry where tastes and trends are ever-evolving and constantly changing. I wouldn’t consider myself overly trendy either personally or as a designer, but I’m always taking note of the things that I see in design magazines, in stores, at trade shows, and even on Instagram. One trend that has caught my eye recently is all the fun wavy, scalloped shapes that I’ve noticed on everything from furniture to rugs to lighting and accessories.

Now I realize that a scalloped edge on a towel or basket isn’t exactly revolutionary. Scallops have been adorning nurseries and Easter baskets for ages! The iteration I’ve noticed, however, is more sophisticated, playful, and even sculptural. It’s also frequently combined with fun color combinations or prints, which somehow my neutral, clean-line -loving heart cannot get enough of! There’s also a lot of interest in British design at the moment, which has historically had a much more eclectic, colorful, and playful aesthetic. Now that the all-gray-everything trend has started to release its grip on this side of the pond (whew!), it makes sense that some of the things that British designers have been using and doing well—scallops and color—are gaining popularity here now.

I’ve rounded up some examples of waves and scallops adorning products of all kinds. I’ve tried to feature products that are in stock at the time of posting, which has honestly been hard! I’m apparently not the only one loving this trend!
