One Room, Three Design Styles: Bedroom Edition
Over the years, I’ve had more than a few clients say to me, “I don’t really know what my style is, but I know what I like when I see it!”
I so often work with clients who are having a hard time getting a project off the ground because of some sort of indecision. Maybe they’re worried about spending money on things they may not like in a few years, maybe they aren’t sure what style fits them best, or maybe they’re trying to blend two different design tastes and don’t quite know how to do that. In cases like those, my go-to solution is to choose foundational pieces that are versatile and timeless. Pieces that are like the little black dresses of interior design— just swap out accessories to achieve a completely different look.
I’m planning on making this “One Room, Three Design Styles” a series and decided to start with a bedroom because they seem to be the last space many clients tackle since they aren’t part of the “public” spaces in a home. But bedrooms are spaces that are SO important to our daily lives and can make such a difference in how we feel!
The foundational piece in this example bedroom is an upholstered, updated wingback-style bed in a super versatile light gray fabric. You’ll see that its clean lines and neutral fabric color lend itself to all three design styles I’ve chosen—mid-century modern, casual coastal, and modern traditional—but could also work with even more styles than those! The bed pictured is a very affordable option from Wayfair but it’s such a classic, lots of similar options are out there at other retailers.
Mid-Century Modern:
In this combination, its the tapered leg bedside tables in a mid-toned wood that pull this look into feeling mid-century. The sleek wall sconces, abstract art, and graphic patterned rug round out the mid-mod style.

Casual Coastal:
Here the texture of the raffia covered bedside tables combined with lots cool blues lend a beachy vibe. Airy glass lamps, a plush rug, and some nautical-themed prints evoke a chic coastal hotel feel.

Modern Traditional:
In this design, the super clean lines of the bed and bedside tables feel modern while the Persian-style rug and urn-shaped lamps offer a more traditional feeling counterpoint.

See how that one really great, timeless bed worked seamlessly in all three designs? It allowed some of the other (and more easily changeable) elements to do the heavy lifting when it came to adding style and personality. Hopefully I’ve made my case for why timeless is best when it comes to foundation pieces, but if not, drop me a line with questions or send me a suggestion for the next One Room, Three Design Styles installment!
